PhD Student Phil Faanu wins the 2023 CASID_ACEDI Kari Polanyi-Levitt Prize

Phil Faanu receiving an award for his paper.Faanu’s award-winning essay, “Barracks in the Forest: The Social Costs of Militarized Artisanal Small-Scale Mining Policy in Ghana,” is recommended for publication at CJDS.

The author examines how the Ghanaian government policy on small-scale artisanal mining has resulted in social injustices. Informed by a social and environmental justice perspective and data collected in one district, the policy is linked to social costs incurred by miners, including arbitrary arrests, deaths, physical and human rights abuses, loss of minerals, and destruction of equipment.

This nuanced paper offers a critical analysis of the social injustices imposed by government policy while recognizing the importance of artisanal mining for people’s livelihoods and the need to decrease environmental costs. It extends the literature on artisanal mining and has the potential to advance just environmental policies.

The award was announced at the Annual General Meeting of CASID on May 30th at Vari Hall-VCH at York University.
